Ki Teitzei: The Torah's Battle Plan for Your Inner War This Elul

Welcome to Words for the Journey: Life Lessons from Deuteronomy, Part VI: Parshas Ki Teitzei

Why does one Torah portion hold 74 of the 613 mitzvos, and why does it open with going out to war?

Ki Teitzei is the most mitzvah-dense parsha in the Torah: about 12% of all the commandments in a single portion. Rabbi Greenberg shows how its opening words, “When you go out to war against your enemy,” describe not only a physical battle but the lifelong struggle with the yetzer hara and with evil in the world. The weapons for that fight can’t be bought in a store. They are the mitzvos themselves.

From there the shiur unpacks three lessons hidden in the verse’s wording, a Kabbalistic reading of “capturing a captive,” the meaning of the number 74, the mitzvah of building a fence on your roof, and why Elul is a month of love and closeness rather than dread.

🔎 In this video we explore: • Why “go out” to war? Take the first step and God provides the rest • Rabbi Chanina ben Dosa’s rock and Reb Mendel Futerfas at the Siberian camp gate • War is never the Jewish default: peace is who we are • “Al oyvecha”: the moral clarity to know your cause is just • The holy spark inside every enemy, and how revealing it transforms evil • 74 = Eid and Da’as: every mitzvah makes you God’s witness • The fence on the roof: checking your ego when you start something new • Why mitzvos remain in the Messianic era, and how that exposes a false messiah • Elul: not a zoo with open cages, but the King in the field

💡 Key Insights:

  • Make the effort first; Heaven supports the one who takes the step.
  • We go out to war temporarily; peace is the Jewish natural state.
  • Most evil has a spark of good at its source that can be revealed and transformed.
  • Mitzvos aren’t a crutch for imperfect people: the more refined you are, the more they elevate you.
  • Elul is when the King is accessible to everyone, with a smiling face.
