Why the Mishna Calls Gematria "Dessert"
Welcome to Ethics of Our Fathers: Chapter 3, Mishna 18 — the teaching of Rabbi Eliezer ben Chisma, concluding Chapter 3
Moshe Rabbeinu equals 613. So does the word “mitzvos,” spelled out letter by letter. So why does the Mishna call gematria dessert, and not the meal?
Rabbi Eliezer ben Chisma (in some versions, Rabbi Elazar Chisma) closes Chapter 3 with a short, cryptic teaching: the laws of mixed bird offerings (kinin) and the calculations of a woman’s cycle (pischei niddah) are the body of halacha; astronomy (tekufos) and gematria are the “parpera’os” of wisdom, its desserts.
Rabbi Greenberg explains the distinction: even laws that demand math and probability are the body of Torah, because they decide what we actually do. Astronomy and gematria are delights that add flavor and whet the appetite for more. Then the class serves dessert: a feast of 613s, the Torah codes, the Rambam hidden in Shemos, and the sukkah, the only mitzvah that surrounds the whole person without limit.
🔎 In this video we explore: • Why a rabbi who couldn’t lead the prayers earned the name “the strengthened one” • Kinnim and niddah: why laws built on math and probability are still the body of halacha • Dessert or appetizer? Two readings of “parpera’os” • PaRDeS, the four levels of Torah, and where gematria fits • Moshe Rabbeinu, “mitzvos,” and tov² + chai²: the many roads to 613 • Sukkah = 248, between “zerem” (247) and “matar” (249) • 613 on the altitude screen, 358 on the speedometer: the emergency landing story • Hei, kaf, samech: the laws of the sukkah hidden in its letters, and why the sukkah outdoes the mikvah
💡 Key Insights:
- Even a calculation becomes the body of Torah when it rules on practice.
- Gematria and codes are real delights, but they whet the appetite; they don’t replace the meal.
- After the solemn embrace of Rosh Hashanah and Yom Kippur, Sukkot is God’s right arm: pure joy.
