Stand Firm or Keep Moving? The Paradox of Nitzavim-Vayeilech

Welcome to Words for the Journey: Life Lessons from Deuteronomy — Part VIII: Parshas Nitzavim-Vayeilech

Should you stand your ground, or keep moving forward? Nitzavim-Vayeilech is really one parsha split in two, and its two names point in opposite directions. Here is why the Torah needs both, and why some years we read them together.

Read on the last Shabbos before Rosh Hashanah, Parshas Nitzavim opens with “Atem nitzavim hayom” — you are standing today, all of you, before Hashem. The Baal Shem Tov teaches that these words are the blessing God Himself gives the month of Tishrei, which is why we don’t bless the new month in shul that Shabbos. “Hayom,” the Zohar says, is Rosh Hashanah, and “nitzavim” means more than standing: it means standing firm, with the unbending strength of royalty. Rabbi Greenberg shows that the key to that blessing is unity. We are judged as a community, and only a united people can crown God as King.

From there the class explores the covenant of arvus, every Jew a guarantor for every other, and the Rebbe’s question of how the simplest Jew can guarantee the greatest. Then comes the paradox at the heart of the double parsha: Nitzavim, stand firm, and Vayeilech, keep going, as Moshe did on the last day of his life at 120. It closes with the Ramban’s striking claim that in the days of Moshiach the yetzer hara will be gone, and the Rebbe’s answer to what will challenge us then.

🔎 In this video we explore: • Why we don’t bless the month of Tishrei, and the Baal Shem Tov’s reason: God blesses it Himself • Omed vs. nitzav: the difference between standing and standing firm like a king • Why our Rosh Hashanah judgment, and God’s kingship, depend on Jewish unity • The Rebbe’s question: how can a “schlepper” guarantee the elite? Every Jew is the head • Arevim three ways: responsible, intermingled, and sweet • Why Nitzavim and Vayeilech are split some years, and why those who rush their growth often backslide • Moshe at 120, on his last day, still going to learn more • Will life in the days of Moshiach be boring? The Rebbe’s plane-and-rocket answer

💡 Key Insights:

  • Strength on the Day of Judgment comes from standing together, not standing alone.
  • Every Jew has something no other Jew has, so every Jew can guarantee every other.
  • Lasting growth needs both: first get firmly grounded, then keep moving.
  • Not every challenge comes from the yetzer hara; some of the deepest come from moving between good things.

🤔 Reflection Questions:

  1. Where do you need to stand firmer as a Jew, and where do you need to keep moving?
  2. What does someone you consider “simpler” than you have that you are missing?
