Why Good Character Collapses Without Torah
Welcome to Ethics of Our Fathers: Chapter 3, Mishna 17 — the teaching of Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah
Can a person be truly good without Torah? And can a person truly have Torah without being a mentsch? Rabbi Elazar ben Azariah says the answer to both is no.
“Im ein Torah ein derech eretz; im ein derech eretz ein Torah” — where there is no Torah there is no derech eretz, and where there is no derech eretz there is no Torah. The two depend on each other in both directions. But “derech eretz” is a phrase no single English translation can hold, so this class works through several of its meanings: decent, ethical character; balance; engagement with the physical world and earning a living; and, by gematria, prayer.
We begin with the man himself: the 18-year-old chosen to lead the Sanhedrin, who woke up with a white beard so the sages would respect him (the source of “I am like a man of seventy” in the Haggadah), and who threw open the doors of the beis medrash that Rabban Gamliel had kept closed to anyone whose inside didn’t match his outside. That story turns out to be the key to his teaching: let in everyone who is sincere, but never lower the standard of being a mentsch.
🔎 In this video we explore: • The Maharal’s warning: goodness built on temperament alone can collapse, and history proves it • Why Torah is “tiferes” — knowing when to lean toward kindness and when toward discipline, as every parent must • Why we study Pirkei Avot in the weeks before receiving the Torah on Shavuos • Rabbi Akiva’s 24,000 students: great scholars held to a higher standard of respect for each other • Rabban Gamliel’s closed door vs. Rabbi Elazar’s open one, and why rejecting sincere but less gifted students is a mistake • Rabbi Shimon bar Yochai vs. Rabbi Yishmael on Torah study and earning a living, and what it says about today’s debate in Israel • Moshe’s answer to the angels at Sinai: every mitzvah is meant for the physical world • Derech eretz = 515 = tefillah: why we pray for health even while going to the doctor
🤔 Reflection Questions:
- Where in your life do you lean too far toward kindness or toward discipline?
- If God “craves” our prayers the way a parent wants a call from a faraway child, what would you talk to Him about today?
