Slavery Began With Ingratitude

Welcome to Words for the Journey: Life Lessons from Deuteronomy — Part VII: Parshas Ki Tavo

Why does the Pesach Haggadah tell the story of the Exodus in the words of a farmer bringing his first fruits? And why did that farmer have to wait fourteen years before he could bring them at all?

Parshas Ki Tavo opens with bikurim, the first fruits brought to the Beis HaMikdash with a spoken declaration of thanks. In this class, Rabbi Greenberg shows how that one mitzvah ties together three of the parsha’s biggest ideas: joy, gratitude and freedom. It comes right after the command to remember Amalek, and Amalek turns out to share its numerical value with safek, doubt. Clear away the doubt and joy becomes possible; joy, in turn, is what real gratitude demands.

From there the shiur turns to the Haggadah. The bondage in Egypt began with a king “who knew not Joseph,” an act of ingratitude toward the man who had saved the country, so the road out of slavery runs through gratitude. Along the way we look at what Lavan was really trying to destroy, why the curses of the tochacha are hidden blessings, and why we will still remember leaving Egypt even in the days of Moshiach.

🔎 In this video we explore: • Why Amalek and safek (doubt) both equal 240, and why doubt is the real enemy of joy • Why bikurim had to wait 14 years, until every Jew had received his share of the land • Bikurim as the Torah’s most dramatic thank-you: gratitude you carry in your hands • How ingratitude enslaves a person, and why freedom requires gratitude • What Lavan really wanted to uproot: not only Yaakov, but the idea of a Jewish nation • Why the curses are read in a low voice, and the Alter Rebbe’s son who fainted hearing them • “In the morning you’ll wish it were evening”: a curse reread as a glimpse of the Redemption

💡 Key Insights:

  • Doubt stalls growth; resolving it is one of the deepest sources of joy.
  • A person who can’t acknowledge what others have given him is not truly free.
  • Gratitude and joy feed each other, and our joy is incomplete while another Jew is still lacking.
  • The Jewish people are both a faith and a nation with a mission, and attacks on us often target the second.

🤔 Reflection Questions:

  1. What doubt in your life, once resolved, would free you to move forward with joy?
  2. Who has given you something you have never properly thanked them for?
